The inquiry would start with asking students to explore what technoloes we use in our homes today (smart phones/watches, alarm clocks etc), and having students choose an item, and trace it’s origins to look at the development of its uses, this could be done in groups, and each group present their work to share what they have found.

The washing machine is a great example, from the ancient and dangerous mangle for wringing clothes out, to how we program our modern washing machines. This would fit into the HASS curriculum also, allowing students to have a wider perspective on the historical context of the object. A record player-tape-CD-smartphone is an accessible way of looking at how people enjoyed music through different periods, and could possibly be bought into the classroom.
