Task 4 : Option 3

A lesson activity for year 3s or 4s

A lesson idea could involve completing a matching activity with pictures of old technology and new technology. Examples of old technology could include:

  • Wood fire with pan
  • Paper map
  • Rotary telephone
  • Typewriter
  • Candle
  • A wind up clock
  • Icebox
  • Feather and ink
  • Horse and carriage
  • Book
  • Record player

These could be matched with the following:

  • Microwave oven
  • Gps
  • Mobile phone
  • Computer
  • Lamp
  • Digital clock
  • Fridge
  • Pen
  • Modern car
  • E-reader
  • Ipod/iphone

This activity could be completed as a class, in pairs or individually depending on the age and level of children’s prior knowledge. If completing in pairs, students would be given a copy of each of the images to share in pairs. Students would have to label and match each piece of technology to its newer digital system by gluing it onto an A3 page and drawing a line to the correct match. Once students have matched up all devices correctly (teacher has checked them), as a class, discuss the purpose of each type of technology. Students then can compare the purpose of the old technology to the new technology and question whether it still serves the same purpose. If students believe it does, then question them on why changes have been made then. This should lead to higher order thinking on how technology is continually changing and how it leads to more efficient and easy to use solutions. The lesson could then be wrapped it up with a video such as Past and present: Technology then and now (Astrolabe, n.d.).

Students would be assessed on correctly matching the technologies (this could be done by observation or collecting the A3 pages and marking them) and the discussion and questioning about the purposes of the devices and how digital technology has evolved to better cater to our needs.

Lesson goals

By the end of the lesson, students will have explored a range of digital systems by matching older technology with corresponding newer version of this technology.

By the end of the lesson, students will have discussed the purposes of each digital system/ device and how improvements have made the piece of technology more usable.

Unit code:

Identify and explore a range of digital systems with peripheral devices for different purposes, and transmit different types of data (ACTDIK007)
