How can these be used?: The teacher can allow the Year 5 students to use this data for the summative assessment of their Humanities and Social Sciences ( HASS): History performance skills (link to WAHASS56: Interpret information and/or data collected (e.g. sequence events in chronological order, identify cause and effect, make connections with prior knowledge) (SCSA, 2014). Students can be asked to explain the population and economic growth of the Swan River Colony before the arrival of the convicts using these data. The expected answers are: the population was low with only minimal growth in the late 1840s, not enough people to provide labour for buildings and farming, not many people to buy the goods being produced, and the colony had low economic growth, but it trebled in the 1840s.
