Task 1: Option 2
Perth has recently improved the traffic flow along the Kwinana Freeway with the Smart Freeway. The smart freeway uses digital technology to reduce traffic jams and optimise traffic flow. The system makes use of sensors (road induction coils, radar and CCTV) to monitor the flow of traffic. As congestion increases, electronic signage reduces the speed limit to prevent stop-start conditions and reduce risk of collisions. Ramp signals are used to reduce the impact that merging traffic has on the freeway traffic flow. The sensors and signals are linked to the Main Roads operations centre using a dedicated network. More information about the Smart Freeway is available at https://smartfreeways.wa.gov.au.
