I researched digital technologies combined with science for careers and came up with a marine scientist. This career fascinates me as it seems like a career choice for someone who enjoys the outdoors and not the sort of sitting at a desk job that I associate with computing and digital technology. However, when delving into this discipline, it became very clear that marine science heavily relies on digital innovations to map and track the environment and animals. In fact, without these technologies, it would be very difficult to glean any information other than that based on observation. Michelle Thums, a research scientist in marine science, uses satellite tracking devices to track the movements of animals (Western Australian Marine Science Institute, n.d.). The job requires very surprisingly little time outside on boats and actually involves a lot of time spent in the office using digital technology to model, map and plot data that has been gathered by machines. Computing skills are a necessary part of functioning in this career as there are many programs used to effectively track animals.
Machines are also a vital part in this research. Some digital technology used that has enhanced the field of marine science include the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler which measures the speed and direction of ocean currents, autonomous underwater vehicles and geographic information systems (NOOA Ocean Exploration, n.d.).
