I recently read about a young woman in Kenya who had a developed a way to use recycled plastic to create bricks. These bricks are stronger than concrete and address the issue of plastic waste. I found this particularly interesting because plastic waste is such a prevalent issue around the world. The engineer, Nzambi Matee, was tired of waiting for the government to address the problem of plastic solution. She is quoted as saying, “I was tired of being on the sidelines.” Matee took the problem and found a creative and sustainable solution. Matee is credited as being a beacon of hope. I found this poignant because technology should represent a hopeful future. Any student in our classroom could come up with an idea that creatively solves the world’s problems.
