LESSON OVERVIEW: In this lesson year 3/4 students learn to use filtering and operators to narrow their searches and solve problems that appeared in their search results. The filtering tools in the top navigational menu of the search interface can uncover academically valid information, while Operators are the symbols that can be added to a query to make it more targeted. Within this exercise, students experiment with various filters and operators that are relevant to the level of work they are currently undertaking and see how the sources they uncover can change their results. Students then create a real-life user guide to gather more targeted evidence.
Areas of the Australian curriculum covered are
Define simple problems, and describe and follow a sequence of steps and decisions (algorithms) needed to solve them (ACTDIP010)
- ASSESSMENT: By the end of Year 4, students can explain how developed information systems (existing and created) are used and meet personal, school or community needs and can think of new ways of using them. Students understand why it is important to take into consideration the feelings of their audience when online and can apply safe ad respectful practices online
