Option 2 – Visual Programming with Hopscotch
Hopscotch is a coding app for kids to make games, stories, art and other products their imagination creates. It is free and easy to sign up for a free account and lesson plans that you can adapt to suit your curriculum goals and year level.
Additionally there is a useful guide for transitioning children from Scratch Jr (if your students are familiar with this already) to Hopscotch to continue their coding journey.
The Hopscotch environment can be used in science and HASS as well as literacy and numeracy.
CLASSROOM ACTIVITY
One idea for a HASS classroom activity, year 4-6, would be to use Hopscotch to animate an event in history. Students use Hopscotch as a tool to create a product that shows what they know and expresses their understanding of historical concepts by sequencing and explaining the events.
Once you have your account you can download a PDF of this lesson, it is called Hopscotch _ Social Studies Lesson Plan.pdf
