Explain what you think are some of the key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. To what extent are you teaching these in the classroom or to what extent do you think they should be taught and why?
Cyber security is the protection of computer, servers, networks, mobile devices and data from being hacked/attacked. In comparison, cyber awareness is the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours we have towards protecting our information (such as creating strong passwords, having the skills to identify threats to our safety and how to avoid them). Cyber safety refers to individuals managing themselves online safely, responsibility and appropriately.
The three topics should be taught within schools as it is vital for students to understand how to be safe and responsible using online platforms. Students need to develop the knowledge of how to avoid dangerous situations and how to use the internet and applications appropriately for their own safety and privacy. The ICT general capability should be embedded within each subject area to further develop students’ skills around ICT and cyber security/awareness/safety.
