This activity is fantastic for a Year 2 class who are also learning about food and fibre production as part of the Design and Technology curriculum. Students will be introduced to the basic sequence of steps required to grow a plant/crop. The class will plant their own seeds in plastic cups following a sequence of steps. In the next lesson, students will be asked to recall the sequence of steps and write them down in as much detail as possible. Once the students have completed this activity, they will then be given the opportunity in pairs or groups to discuss what might happen if the sequence occurred in a different order, would it work? This encourages collaborative skills as well as exploring how and why sequences work in a particular order.
Students can visit this website: https://www.turtlediary.com/game/grow-a-plant.html on computers or iPads to test their knowledge and grow their own plant. This instructions are displayed on screen as the beginning of the game and then the students need to memorise and use their existing knowledge from the previous lessons to successfully grow their own plant using the correct sequence.
