Task 2 Option 1: Creative Notation

When introduced to the limerick and reminded of rhythm and rhyme, year 6 students were given the task of ‘creative notation’.  Noting the pattern of AABBA, and taking the 1st two lines of a class negotiated limerick, students were asked to decide on shapes to represent a single, a half-beat and a rest. Whilst beat values may vary, the rhythm of the two lines needed to be identical. Notations were developed and followed by tapping a pencil before the words of the limerick were added and the performance repeated.
