Task 2: Data-Patterns & Play

Teachers could encourage students to collect data about numerous topics (both in and outside of school) and then display/represent the collected data in numerous ways. Communication and engagement are a big factor to ensuring this lesson is successful.

Examples could include:

  • how did you get to school today? (bus, car, walk, bike, etc.)
  • favourite breakfast (toast, cereal, juice, etc.)
  • student heights or shoe sizes
  • how many pets do we own?

above are just a few examples that i have participated in during junior primary classes. After the data is collected we talk about different ways to collect and display the information. It could include a tally or a bar/pie or picture graph. We also talk about how we read the information and what we can tell from it, such as most/least popular options.
