Allowing students to become the physics engine designer

The is an interesting science ICT website called pHET run by the university of Colorado. Whilst ICTs are not DTs, the difference with these ICT programs is that they are building blocks program allowing students to place digital inputs into programs that are governed by scientific principles and physical laws. Essentially they are DTs that allow students to create DTs.
Is it possible to take it one step further for students in higher grades and program the physical laws/parameters themselves in order to both gain an understanding of how to create CTs and gain a deeper understanding of physical principles? That would be the question I’d ask.
