Unit 2 Task Brief: Option 1

  1. Explain what you think are some of the key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. To what extent are you teaching these in the classroom or to what extend do you think they should be taught and why?

Throughout a child’s schooling, it is of utmost importance that they are exposed to cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. Why is this important? As the years progress, our world is becoming more and more digital, sharing photos and status’ on social media, online banking, and even writing and emailing assignments on your laptop and sending them off via email. If students are not taught about the dangers of the internet, they may become susceptible to a range of dangers which arise from not being cyber aware.

So, what are the differences between the three topics of cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety?

Cyber security refers to the protection of networks, programs and computers through computer science technology and systems. In terms of teaching cyber security in classroom settings, many activities and lessons can take place in order to make students understand the steps taken to ensure networks are safe for our use.

Cyber awareness is a topic which builds on knowledge, attitudes and behaviours in protecting information and assets. In school contexts, students will have the opportunity to practice creating strong passwords to protect their accounts, become more aware of cyber attacks, and develop overall skills which will equip them to move safely amongst the internet.

Cyber safety is the overall managing of online safety and responsibility. It is important for students to learn about responsibly sharing information, considering the repercussions for doing so, and most importantly being careful with their devices and tools. As students move throughout their schooling, they will have many opportunities to practice cyber safety, and it is the responsibility of teachers to facilitate this learning.
