Unit 2 Option 1

  1. Explain what you think are some of the key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. To what extent are you teaching these in the classroom or to what extend do you think they should be taught and why?

Some of the key differences between cyber security, awareness and safety:

Cyber security is about passwords and who has access to what. For example the IT staff in a school will have access to every school account and password. Every student and staff member will be assigned an account and password which they cannot share with others. More on cyber security is the firewall apps we can purchase to ensure a third party is not able to drop in and see our passwords and other private information.

Cyber awareness is actually knowing what could happen if you do not protect yourself. You are aware of the consequences of not protecting your property and students need to learn about why they need to protect their personal information.

Cyber safety is mainly referring to forums and other online chats. Especially with children; we need to be careful about who we are talking to online and what we are saying. Talking to strangers online can put people in real danger especially children as there are predators online. Even talking to a friend and giving them personal information such as credit card numbers etc. can land people in a lot of trouble.

Students should be taught every year about these concepts. The concepts and the extent of situations will increase as students become older. For example; students will become more and more prone to online bullying as they get older when they are introduced to social media platforms etc.
