Lesson idea: investigating how sound is recorded and presented in simple music making software
For a lesson on how computers record sound and how sound engineers edit and manipulate sound data on computers, you could have students upload recordings of sounds using simple music-making software. Audacity is a good example of free, open-source audio software that could be used for this (https://www.audacityteam.org/). Students can view the waveform of their sounds, as well as add effects, such as delay and distortion, and see the effect this has. You could then use this to launch an investigation into how these effects work. If you were lucky enough to own a few guitar pedals, you could also do this in person.
