Drones are becoming more and more central to the daily lives of many people. Farmers, surveyors, photographers and the police are among many other professions that utilise this technology on a regular basis. The above article details how researchers have developed a new type of drone – an ‘ornithopter’ – based on the evolutionary design of birds. This is a prime example of biomimicry – the emulation of nature in order to solve human problems. I find this area of science and design fascinating. As I read the article, it struck me how complex these these digital technologies need to be in order to mimic this biological design.
