Resource: Story sequencing cards.

Read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ story with the whole class.

Give students picture cards in a random pile.

Allow students to arrange a series of picture cards into the logical order to create the story from beginning, middle and end.

Curriculum: English curriculum,  Year 1 – Recreate texts imaginatively using drawing, writing, performance and digital forms of communication (ACELT1586)

Integration :  Sequencing is also an important component of problem-solving across subjects. Sequencing is also an important component of problem solving across the curriculum, including mathematics (patterns), science (steps to follow in an investigation) and social studies (creating timelines).

Criticisms/concerns: For students of varying reading and comprehension skills, explicit instructions and extra cue cards with ‘beginning, middle, end’ may be required.
