Task 5- Think of a lesson idea for “sharing information online safely” for Pre-primary students

One of the main concepts regarding Information Systems is the importance of people maintaining  social protocols whilst they are using the internet. The lecture indicates that whenever people access the internet, they leave a digital footprint. This online footprint revolves around how people represent themselves and respect others online to maintain a positive reputation. Therefore, in an ever-advancing technological age, it is essential to educate children about using the internet appropriately.

Lesson idea:

Students will view two YouTube clips, have two class discussions, sort images into safe and unsafe categories, explain their reasoning and create a story.

  • Students will watch the Stranger Danger song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92HCKfYakLU
  • Students will participate in a class discussion about not going with strangers.
  • Students will watch Hector’s World story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snbQ3GTXogo
  • Students will participate in a class discussion about not sending personal details to people online.
  • In groups, students will sort images of strangers, safe strangers (police), people they know, address, name, nickname, phone number and school into safe and unsafe categories.
  • In groups, students will explain their reasoning.
  • In groups, students will use the Book Creator Application to create a story about what could have happened to the crab in Hector’s World.

Curriculum links:

Digital Technologies:

  • Students explore how people safely use common information systems to meet information, communication and recreation needs (ACTDIP005).

Integration:

English:

  • Students retell familiar literary texts through performance, use of illustrations and images (ACELT1580).
  • Students deliver short oral presentations to peers (ACELY1647).

Science: Biological Sciences

  • Students can research and discuss the basic needs of sea-creatures in Hector’s World– Living things have basic needs, including food and water (ACSSU002).

The Arts: Visual Arts

  • Students can create a sea-creature from Hector’s World– Students use and experiment with different materials, techniques, technologies and processes to make artworks (ACAVAM107).

Sustainability:

  • The sea-creatures in Hector’s World could lead to sustainability discussions and activities.

Differentiation:

  • Students can select whether they wish to create their story on Book Creator, on paper or perform a role play of the story to the class.
  • Students can work by themselves (paper story) or in groups (Book Creator and role play).

Criticisms/concerns:

  • Students may not have accessed the internet by themselves.
  • This lesson may be time-consuming.
  • Students will need a large amount of scaffolding on how to use Book Creator, how to make a story on paper and how to perform a role play.

Other year levels:

  • Older year levels could write posters or a power point presentation about the different aspects of cyber safety (ACTDIP009), (ACTDIP013).
