Task 2: Patterns & Play


I am a Grade 1 teacher and in my class we collect data on so many things. Our school has had a big push towards Nude Food lately. As a task we collected all the rubbish in students lunchboxes for a day and then sorted this into:

  • compostables
  • paper
  • plastic
  • metal

We stuck the rubbish to a big piece of paper to show visually the differences between each category and this opened up a discussion about the amount of rubbish we had and ways we could reduce it. We completed the task again later in the year and compared our results.

It provides a quick and easy way to create a range of different graphs and could be done as a whole class or students could create their own.
