Option 3: maths word problems

On my recent prac in a Year 4 classroom, I noticed that a number of the students were having difficulty with maths word problems.  Some of the students did not have an appropriate mental framework to apply to these questions, and some were making mistakes deriving from the fact that their working out was either not neat or they did not have their numbers in the correct place value.

With this in mind, I have created the attached flow chart.  It sets out the steps involved in solving a word problem in maths.

In reflecting on this flowchart, it occurs to me that it would be a good activity to work through the development of this chart with the class.  This would serve two ends.  First, it would help to entrench the steps involved in solving these problems .  Second, it would operate to introduce the children to the algorithms and programming in their thinking.
