Task 2: Patterns & Play

Option 1

This idea is part of my previous assignment. I did not have a chance to use it during my prac, but I hope this could give you some ideas when you are teaching how to collect data and picture graphs.

Children will collect data to make a picture graph about ‘Our Favourite Animal’ in a class (year 2).

The students will:

  1. discuss about their favourite animal in groups and draw their favourite animal on an A5 piece of paper
  2. stick their drawing on a blackboard and put the same animals in the same column.
  3. count how many animals are in the same column and write the number at the bottom of the column (e.g. 3 rabbits, 4 dogs, etc)

The final product will be similar to the picture, but all the animals will be replaced by children’s drawings.

This idea links to the Year 2 digital technologies curriculum:  Data can have patterns and can be represented and used to make simple conclusions (ACTDIK002)

This idea could also be integrated with different subjects.

  • Year 2 mathematics curriculum: Create displays of data using lists, table and picture graphs and interpret them (ACMSP050).
  • Development of artistic skills through experimentation with shape, colour to create artwork (ACAVAM107)

I have not gotten a chance to implement this into a class yet, but I think how to let the students finish drawing and collect every data within a specific time period might be a potential concern.
