Elise Chatindiara▸ Task 7: Visual Programming
Option 2: Describe a classroom activity that incorporates a visual programming environment
I use the Bee Bot robots in our classroom with a plastic grid mat. Under this clear mat I can place any visuals, numbers or letters on cards (one per square). My class are Year 1 students. One activity we recently did was linked with Literacy and recognizing upper and lower case letters. We placed cards with one letter (upper or lower case) under each square of the grid. Students had to program their bee bot to go from the star square (start position) on a track to drive over any two upper case letters and land on an upper case letter (it is fine for them to drive over lower case letters too!). Students wrote their code on a mini whiteboard and then tried it on their bee bot robot.
