My son works for the Australian affiliate of an international company as a Character Rigger using a range of software including Maya and Mudbox. This is a job creating the characters that are used in movies and videos. The finished characters are then passed to the animators who manipulate the figures and insert them using green screen techniques into movies often interacting with other virtual characters or with live action.
There is a lot of coding going on here with specification on how points in the graphic move and how that movement interacts with other points so as to appear natural.
