Steve Grant▸ Task 4: Digital Systems
The Internet on Mars (Year 5-6)
There are many nations (US, Russia, China, Europe) and even private companies (SpaceX) are now claiming that humans will colonise Mars in the next 10-20 years.
Using your knowledge of networks and digital systems, imagine what wold you need for an internet on Mars? Would the MarsNet work by itself? Would MarsNet communicate with Earth's Internet? How would that work? What do you think might be some of the challenges? You might need to consider light-delay between Earth and Mars (http://blogs.esa.int/mex/2012/08/05/time-delay-between-mars-and-earth/)
Sketch out a rough diagram of what systems you would need for a MarsNet and imagine what kinds of equipment you would need.
Investigate Australia's link with international space probes, Canberra's Deep Space Communication Complex (https://www.cdscc.nasa.gov/) and how they overcome the problems talking with spaceships very very far away
