Brigid Sweeney▸ Task 1: Introducing DTs

Digital Technologies Job

Google Crisis Response Team Member

Description: The Google Crisis Response Team was set up after the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Members of this team provide: updated satellite images of disaster areas, relief money; enhanced web services for those people on the ground; set up a service called “Person Finder” (which enabled people to find each other after a disaster); set up and update early warning systems; disaster preparedness; emergency response co-ordination and are involved with post-crisis rebuilding plans and application.

I found this really interesting as I had never thought of careers in digital technologies being so integral to the crisis/emergency response area. As early warning systems and fast emergency response is crucial to help to prevent loss of lives, it makes sense that people with computational thinking skills and digital technology skills would be involved in this area.
