We did something similar in stage 5 history where we were exploring "popular culture' and the influence that varied technologies has had on popular culture and its wider exposure in society.
Eventually, we divided the class into groups and gave them "topics" to research how technology had influenced specific areas eg, news / information, entertainment, recreation, day to day activities. Students then had to "predict" how future technologies would influence society.
It turned out to be fairly engaging as the cringe factor of old technology (TV's, phones, stereo's) engaged the students as well as the intrigue of investigating the levels of technology in the future.
