An activity I ran with my Year 2 class when developing the concept of algorithms was mapping. I created a map that the students had to follow to get them to a particular location within the school. We followed it and were successful. We returned back to our classroom and chose one step to leave out of our directions. We then tried to follow it again and were not successful. We discussed the importance of each step within an algorithm as well as their order – linking this in with procedures.
Students then got to design a small course for another student to get them to perform a task successfully. The student going through the course could only do exactly what the student reading the process was saying. Following these types of activities we eventually began to start using plugged coding and it was obvious that they understood the concept with the online examples they were engaging with. #cserTask6
