Option 3: I like the idea of linking to the curriculum topics. I'm currently teaching Earth and Space. I think it would be interesting to have students explore how early detection and notifications of natural disasters have been improved on in time and what technologies available now that weren't in the past have saved lives. Maybe even have them explore how current systems would change the results of Pompeii.
