Samantha Jordan▸ Task 3: Data- Representation


In Prep we are learning sign language and we talk about it being a special code that people can use to communicate with that doesn't involve their voices. To reinforce this idea we also have the children play around with creating their own secret codes either in writing or actions. Some students were encoraged to change each letter of the alphabet to a different symbol, others were asked to come up with one image to mean a phrase, others were asked to come up with a secret gesture that meant a phrase such as tapping both knees meant "Good Morning". They enjoyed being able to share their secret codes with others and when I discussed that computers 'talk' in a special code they were able to understand the basic concept.
