Option 2.

I am a primary School Art Teacher. Students in my city (Hobart) have wonderful exposure to contemporary art forms such as digital artworks via Mona and events such as Dark MOFO. I would use the Scratch how to tutorials to give students a basic understanding of working with the program. I would then get them to review the posted works and find programs that they would consider digital artworks. I would then get them to create their own using the Scratch tools.
