Option 2: Sequencing of Instructions
I recently did a lesson with a Grade 4 class on writing a procedural text. The students designed and wrote a procedure for the game of hopscotch. The students had a rubric to follow for assessment, however when I reviewed their work I could see many gaps in their instructions. This task would have been improved greatly if I incorporated the sequence of events as a robotic task where their instructions where followed by a human robot as in the ‘jam sandwich’ activity (module 6.4). This could have shown the gaps in their instructions and allowed the students the opportunity to self-correct immediately.
Another way of approaching this task could have been in the form of a flowchart where it could branched out to yes and no responses such as;
The stone landed in the square ‘yes’ ‘no’ etc. (module 6.6).
